A few days ago, those attending the CinemaCon in Las Vegas they were able to enjoy a curious film event. During the Warner presentation the first trailer The Matrix: Resurrections , the fourth film in the legendary saga of the Wachowski sisters.
The continuation of one of the most iconic stories of science fiction cinema aroused immediate expectation. But for now, and beyond details such as that the characters suffer from amnesia, little is known about their plot. What is clear is that it is a cinematographic audacity of considerable scope. After all, the original trilogy still sparks a considerable amount of interest. In addition, it is the focal point of a rich mythology in comics, anime, manga, and also, a notorious influence on film.
So the return of its central characters to their universe is not only preceded by curiosity. Also for some questions about what we can expect about a capital story to understand cinema today.
What characters return and which not to The Matrix: Resurrections ? Where does it lead the new story? Is it a reboot, a remake, or an entirely new point of view? We leave you below all the information available about the upcoming film.
New faces, old stories and a universe to go through
Good news is that the main characters will be back incarnated by their original actors. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles in The Matrix: Resurrections . It is still unclear how their return to the movie universe will plot the plot, beyond hinting that they both suffer from amnesia.
Is it a way to indicate that the eternal cycle of the chosen one that arises and then dies is underway new? At least it’s the way that director Lana Wachowski will raise the issue on a larger universe. In the first images shown at CinemaCon, Neo talks about “dreams”, which are nothing more than memories of the original films . On the other hand, Carrie – Anne Moss also seems to be part of this half-resurrection in what is a journey through the original mythology.
For now, Keanu Reeves shows enormous enthusiasm for his return to the role that made him a movie icon. A few months ago I commented on this in an interview with Empire in which he answered questions on the subject:
“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that suited me . That is the only reason to do it. Working with her again is just amazing. It has been really special, and I think the story has some significant things to say, and from which we can draw. ”
In the trailer you could also see Neil Patrick Harris , who for the occasion is the psychiatrist who listens to Neo’s confessions. But it’s not the only novel addition to the cast. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra and Ellen Hollman are part of the new faces. It was recently announced that Jessica Henwick and Christina Ricci would be joining the rest of the actors in the set.
Those who do not return to ‘The Matrix: Resurrections’
To the surprise and disappointment of the fans, the actor Laurence Fishburne will not return as Morpheus to The Matrix: Resurrections . Although it has been rumored that there will be a young version of the character, it is unclear if Neo’s classic mentor will make a return in any way.
“I haven’t been invited,” Fishburne told the magazine New York Magazine . “Maybe that will make me write another play. I am looking for the blessing in that. I wish you the best. I hope it’s great. ”
He also does not return to the set Hugo Weaving , who months ago stated that director Lana Wachowski herself had decided not to include him in the cast. The situation was somewhat confusing and seems more related to the fact of the immediate availability of the actor. In this regard, Weaving gave an interview to Collinder in which he explains his absence:
“I had some initial reluctance about the idea of returning to the Matrix after having done three movies already, but then I read the script and got an offer through my agent. I immediately answered yes to that, and then we entered into negotiation. At the time I was doing a play, but we were arranging dates and things so we could do both. And then Lana decided that she didn’t want to change their dates, so I couldn’t. In short, that’s what happened. “
A new director for The Matrix: Resurrections
On this occasion, the director will be Lana Wachowski . In the script, the credits will be provided by Aleksandar Hemon, David Mitchell and the own Lana Wachowski. A striking addition to the production team is that of Chad Stahelski , the creator of John Wick . The expert will be responsible for the choreography of the fight and action scenes in The Matrix: Resurrections .
“They asked David Leitch and I to help with the choreography and the physical training of some of the actors. I have helped in one sequence and David in another. Lana has come back with a lot of love to give at this ‘family reunion’, so it’s been a lot of fun, especially meeting people from the team again. We had just finished a sequence in San Francisco just before the pandemic started, ”Stahelsk stated at CinemaCon.
Because Lilly Wachowski is not involved in the production? A few months ago he answered the question in a virtual panel of the Association of Television Critics:
“TO He had come up with this idea for another Matrix movie, and we had a chat. In fact, we started talking about it between [nuestro] dad dying and [nuestra] mom dying, which were like five weeks apart. And there was something about the idea of going back and being a part of something he’d done before that was expressly unappealing. It was like wanting to go back to something that I had done before, and like [caminar] down old roads that I had walked (…) And I didn’t want to do that ”.
A familiar story in a new tone
Plot details are numbered, but the CinemaCon trailer description provided a few more. As can be read, Neo is living in a San Francisco in the near future stuck in a boring existence.
Soon after, he runs into Trinity in a cafe and she asks him: “Do we know each other?” . The advance gave very little data other than that, but something was clear. The Matrix is once again the mystery that amazed and dazzled moviegoers around the world more than twenty years ago.
